Dark Content (2015)

Dark Content is a series of five short videos about internet content moderators. The interviews focus on the emotional difficulties and implications of the job. The workers remain anonymous; their voices are altered and their faces are replaced by computer-generated avatars. Ironically, the videos can only be viewed through the Darknet, the place where most of the content removed from the "surface" internet goes. Eva and Franco Mattes invite users to reflect on their preconceptions about both "sides" of the internet, which are not as diametrically opposed as they might at first seem. If the Darknet can be a platform for free speech — as the Arab Spring has shown — the internet we usually browse is also a place of surveillance, and it is sometimes unclear whose interests are being put first.
